A123 Systems to power Smart Grid project
It will be the biggest Smart Grid project in UK history – and now A123Systems has been announced as the chief supplier for the Customer-Led Network Revolution.
The lithium-ion battery maker will supply six grid battery systems to Northern Powergrid. They are designed for peak load shifting and are able to manage fluctuations that may occur in voltage on the power grid. Each of the battery systems supplied features a 2.5MW system, two 100kW systems and three 50kW systems.
It is hoped they will be able to maintain power capabilities for around two hours and help to provide a consistent delivery of power to consumers. The Consumer-Led Network Revolution should be in place by 2012 and will be the UK’s largest smart grid project to date. It has received funding from the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets’ Low Carbon Networks Fund.
